FIX: BCP Out Fails with Exception Error if You Use a Format File to Change Order of Columns

Symptoms
If you use Bcp.exe to export a table to a flat file, the process may fail with an exception error if you use a format file to change the order of the columns during the export. The exception error occurs within the Bcp.exe file and the following error message appears:

The instruction at “memory_address” referenced memory at “memory_address”.
The memory could not be “written”.The output file is created but no rows are exported.
Resolution
Use a view to change the order of the columns to export. Then, use the view when you perform the bulk copy program and have the format file match the order of the columns in the view.

FIX: “Exception 0xc0000005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION” and SQL Server 2008 R2 crashes when you start a SQL Server Extended event session

Symptoms
Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 R2 fix release.
Resolution
Consider the following scenario:You start a SQL Server Extended Event session in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2.You perform actions that are bound to events in the Xevent session on a case-sensitive database. In this scenario, SQL Server may crash, and then a mini-dump file is generated. Additionally, the following exception is logged in the SQL Server error log file:?

Exception 0xc0000005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION

PRB: A Timeout Occurs When a Database Is Automatically Expanding

Symptoms
You may experience the following symptoms in SQL Server:A database does not expand automatically although you have the autogrow option on.The Errorlog file does not contain any messages that indicate that the database is full.Client computers that try to modify data in this database receive a “Timeout Expired” message on their user transaction.SQL Profiler displays an “Attention” event on a connection, and, if the computer is running SQL Server 7.0, SQL Profiler also displays an “Exception 822″ error.NOTE: The “Timeout Expired” message is a generic message that you may receive in other situations.
You may notice these symptoms when:You run SQL Profiler for a long time, you capture the Exception event and the IntegerData column, and then you look for an occurrence of the “Exception 822″ error.
-Or-You use the -y822 parameter to start SQL Server. After the database does not automatically expand, you check the Errorlog file for a stack dump because of the “Exception 822″ error.NOTE: The database file may automatically expand, but the timeout occurs when the file is being initialized for use, which must occur for the database to be useful.
Resolution
When a connection issues a Data Modification Lanaguage (DML) statement that requires additional space in a database, SQL Server tries to automatically expand the database, if you have the autogrow option set. The client that issued the statement may time out while the database is expanding, depending on the query timeout value that is configured on the client side. Several applications use a default timeout value of 30 seconds. This timeout ends the client connection and the automatic expansion of the database that it prompted.

FIX: General network error when you try to back up or restore a SQL Server database on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003

Symptoms
When you try to back up a Microsoft SQL Sever database on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:

Processed <Number of Pages> pages for database ‘<databaseName>’, file ‘<databaseName>’ on file 1.
100 percent backed up.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionRead (WrapperRead()).
Server: Msg 11, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
General network error. Check your network documentation.
Processed 1 pages for database ‘<databaseName>’, file ‘<fileName>’ on file 1. However, the backup device file is created successfully and the backup data is valid.
A similar problem may also occur when try to restore a SQL Server database on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, and you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:

ODBC: Msg 0, Level 16, State 1
Communication link failure Generally, the backup device file is still created. However, the file may not be valid depending on when the failure occurred. Also, when this problem occurs, an error such as the following is typically logged in the SQL Server error log:

2004-05-26 09:44:16.77 backup BACKUP failed to complete the command backup database testdb to disk=’c:\temp\testdb.bak’ with init, stats=10Note This problem may occur when the SQL Server connection uses the Named Pipes Net-Library.
When the Sqlmaint.exe utility runs the RESTORE VERIFYONLY command, you may notice an error message that is similar to the following in the SQL Server error log:

BackupDiskFile::OpenMedia: Backup device ‘C:\MSSQL\db_200401261900.BAK’ failed to open. Operating system error = 32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.).Also, you may notice an error message that is similar to the following in the SQL Server maintenance plan output file:

Error message when you try to install SQL Server 2005: “Could not find a package to install on the installation media”

Symptoms
When you try to install a version of MicrosoftSQL Server 2005 that has been downloaded from the Microsoft Web site, you receive the following error message:

Could not find a package to install on the installation media.Additionally, error messages that resemble the following may be logged in the SQLSetupNumber_ServerName_Core(local).log file:

2005/9/30 10:5:19Error: Action “DeterminePackageTransformsAction” threw an exception during execution.
Failed to open package to determine installing product code : 110NotesThe SQLSetupNumber_ServerName _Core(local).log file is located in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Files folder.Number is a placeholder for a number that increases for every installation of SQL Server 2005. The log file that has the largest value for Number in the file name is the log file for the most recent installation of SQL Server 2005.
Resolution
This problem occurs because a Sqlrun_*.msi file in the Setup folder on the SQL Server 2005 Setup media is corrupted. For example, the Sqlrun_NS.msi file is corrupted. Therefore, the Setup program cannot open the corrupted package during the installation and returns error code 110.
