How to Become an Affiliate Marketer

01/24/2010

For those new to online business a topic that has more than likely has come up is affiliate marketing.? Affiliate marketing is the process of making money online by advertising another websites products or services.? If you are new to being a webmaster or blogger affiliate marketing should be a consideration if you plan to make money online. First though you will need to build a web presence which is receiving a decent amount of traffic.? If you would like to learn how to build a website then I would recommend visiting w3schools.com.?These guys have a huge amount of free tutorials teaching people html, css, javascript, and any other web language that is needed to build a website.? Now if you would prefer to take an easier route when attempting to make money online then perhaps you should consider blogging.? You can create your free blog at blogger.com, wordpress.com and typepad.com just to name a few.? Once you have decided which web presence you would like to introduce to the web your next task should be building traffic.

?Building traffic is truly one of the most difficult tasks of being a webmaster or blogger.? It is much more difficult than creating new content or choosing which layout you would like to use.? Website marketing will more than likely take up 80% of your time especially if you are attempting to gain a coveted first page on Google’s SERPs (search engine ranking pages) for a competitive keyword.? Now to get to the top of any major search engine there are a couple of things you will want to do.? First and most important is having a website or blog that is useful and having the content updated daily.? The next thing that you should work on is building backlinks.? A backlink is your URL on someone else’s website.? There are many ways to build backlinks such as submitting to free directories, social bookmarking sites, blog commenting, article writing, and guest posting.? If you would like to know how many backlinks would be necessary to gain a first page for a particular keyword then type it into Google and go down the list checking the number of backlinks on each by going to yahoo and typing link:www.theirurl.com.? Now once you have reached the top of SERPs and begin receiving a decent amount of organic traffic it is time to decide which affiliate program will be most helpful in capitalizing on your traffic.

?One of the biggest questions throughout forums and other media which webmasters communicate is “I am getting XXXX amount of traffic how do I make money off it?”? To answer this should be on a case by case basis.? Personally I think a mistake most webmasters make is rather than finding something that would actually help their visitor they prefer to take the easy way out and sign up with a Google Adsense account.? Google Adsense is a program that Google offers which places ads on your website of related websites then pays you for each visitor that clicks off your website or blog.? I think the only time to use Google Adsense is when there is no other helpful affiliate program.? For example I run a website that teaches people how to make money online without a web presence I chose to advertise for websites that paid people to work for them.? In turn I get paid for everything that the visitor does for the website that I referred them to.? I also run a blog about fishing and rather than use adsense I chose to use click bank which is a massive marketplace where you can pick and chose which product you would like to offer on your website or blog then are paid a commission for each sale usually much higher than a click on an ad.? So before opting for a PPC (pay per click) system it may be in your best interest to look through some of the other options such as amazon.com, clickbank.com, and other affiliate programs. Truly though once you get the traffic deciding how to make money should not be that hard just take the time to look through your options before deciding.

Notepad++

Dreamweaver and such designing tools might have become very advanced in the recent years but I am still far from satisfied with them.I prefer to do the coding with a simple text editor and be in total control of the code and not end up with unnecessarily long code.Recently I discoverd Notepad++ which has the few bells and whistles that are desired by hard core programmers such as code highlighting, Regular Expression Search/Replace support, capability to extend functionality with plugins and nice depository of contributed ones.Worth your attention.

Filezilla

If you are like me and don't use WYSIWYG editors to do your HTML/CSS designs then you are probably need or are already using a standalone FTP client to upload/download files to and from your server. Filezilla is a free tool that I have been using for some time and has not failed me.New version 3 has lots of new features, if you are FTPing stuff often maybe you should check it out.

Xampp

XAMPP is an apache server distribution that integrates php, mysql, phpmyadmin and a bunch of other great open source projects into an easy installation. It can be used on production servers to host one's sites but I mostly use it locally to code and test my html/css/php projects. Its easier to develop locally because there is no need to upload files on servers everytime, and only upload when your project is complete. It can be installed on Windows/Linux and lots of other platforms and if you are serious about developing you should get it installed in your computer and start playing with it.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free web site statistics package that anyone can easily incorporate into their website in a few minutes. Here I recently found a video tutorial Firebug debugging to help you begin the

Gimp

GIMP is an open source image processing package that can help photo retouching, image composition, format conversion, and, among other things, animation you. It will not replace Adobe's Photoshop any time soon, but the free alternatives have been found to have a lot of followers, and through its commitment to plug-in architecture built in the only image processing tools, you will not need to . Some of its features are given a demonstration of the way, but nothing can convince you to actually install it and try more than you himself.

Drupal

Drupal is a content management system like WordPress, but much more expandable. Wordpress is a good CMS (content management system to expand) for simple Web sites and although there are many plugins to their capabilities would not I recommend building anything other than a blog with. Drupal on the other side was to be constructed in such extensible. A programmer digging in its code is its flexibility, appreciate the quality of the code, and the modular design and simplicity to write a new module. Drupal has been built from the ground up a tool for creating community sites, and as a result it has many features to support such sites is, but it is also suitable for supporting standard websites. So You Want to Be Your Own Webmaster?

11/11/2009

Once a site is created, it is the job of the webmaster to maintain the site so that it remains a valuable resource. The project site maintenance is more common than the area of development and creation, but it is very important and often overlooked.

Some Website Maintenance Activities and Updates Include:

  • Text edits - schedules, calendars, seminars, training, events, sales, client testimonials, case studies/success stories, press releases and news stories
  • Continuation of search engine optimization - links back, meta data, site maps
  • Design and creation of sales announcements/promotions
  • Design and creation of client newsletters
  • Check website for browser compatibility and link integrity
  • Update, change, or create information contained on databases
  • Redesign pages or sections to improve the look and feel of the website
  • Creation of entirely new pages or sections as the website grows or changes
  • Reorganizing site structure for ease of future website maintenance and growth

A webmaster's job is tricky.? Besides all the chores listed above, webmasters also monitor how many people visit the site, how visitors enter the site, how long they stay on each page they visit, and which links they use.? This monitoring helps business in many ways.? The information that is gathered can be essential to improving the website and the entire marketing approach of the business.

Before rolling up your sleeves and dive into the world of technology you please familiarize yourself with the proper Webmaster Job Description:

  • 2+ years of experience with HTML 3.2/4.0 at the tag level, no WYSIWYG is required.
  • 2+ years of DHTML, COM and client-side JavaScript programming experience is also required.
  • 2+ years thorough knowledge of browser compatibility issues for all platforms/major browsers.
  • 2+ years of Microsoft server-side VBScript and ASP development experience.
  • 2+ years conversion of existing images (TIFF, BMP, PSD) for online use (JPG, GIF) using Adobe ImageReady and Photoshop is a must.

Although many people are successful in learning the technologies required and use them to maintain their own website, most people hire a professional. With many years experience who can do things on your website that did not even know could be done.

Hire a webmaster? Follow these rules:

05/19/2009

A common frustration they tell me is they don’t have a handle on their website in part because they have a difficult time getting in touch with their webmaster, and have no idea how to update their sites on their own. Does this sound familiar to you?
First, make sure you have the keys to your website. You have to be in complete control of your website, even if you hire someone to do the design and upkeep.

This means you have to be the one that registers the domain name and establishes a hosting account.

Why?

Because that way you can fire your webmaster and hire somebody different without the pain and frustration of trying to pry your website files, usernames and passwords out of the fingers of the person you just fired. Transferring a website is not overly difficult, but there are typically downtimes and room for errors that you shouldn’t have to deal with.

I suggest that you register your domain name at my service, which is a private label of GoDaddy. But you should host your website somewhere else for cost/security/peace-of-mind reasons we don’t need to get into here.

I recommend Kiosk hosting for script-intensive websites, and Hostgator for basic blog and brochure type sites or mini-sites (be sure to snag their coupon code on the homepage). The simplest plan of either service is fine to start with, and scale up as your needs grow. If you need visual help in doing this step, check out my free First Website Tutorial site.

Second, you should get an understanding of the basics of website management. This means learning how to upload files, how to go in and make simple changes, and how to set up certain features of a website (like 404 error pages, email accounts, or simple file & folder name redirects).

You can learn how to do this in a couple hours from the videos Chris Morris and I made at DiscovercPanel.com for less money than 1 hour of your webmaster’s design and update time. You’ll be amazed at how simple these website management skills are, and how much you will likely be overcharged for them by a webmaster!

Third, you should make your first website a blog. Even if you don’t plan on doing any real ongoing updates, using the WordPress platform for your website makesit even easier to update the way your website looks without going to Geek School.

Personally, I prefer to use the blogging service Blogi360 to run my blog (think WordPress on steroids) because of it’s publishing power for extra traffic, tech support team already in place, and they fiddle with all the plugins and theme installs so I don’t have to. Whether you use basic WordPress or Blogi360, though, if you can use yourmouse and keyboard, you can update your website pretty easily. (See the free audio training at UnstoppableBlogging.com for strategies in this area).

Fourth, if you do hire a webmaster and/or designer, don’t hire someone solely based on cost. Check out their portfolio, communicate with their references, and be very specific about what your needs are and your timeline for completion. Remember, the phrase “You get what you pay for” is typically true when it comes to webmasters, although it’s also easy for you to be overcharged if you don’t have a clue about what you’re asking about.

Ultimately, you should spend your time doing what you do best - that’s where the real money is made in any business. But by knowing a few of the basics of website management, you can avoid being held hostage and feel confident that your website will be working for you and not against you.
