Interpreting Standard Aliases

07/25/2009

Unlike the aliases described above, which were designed for name-compatibility with other interfaces, the aliases built into Windows PowerShell are generally designed for brevity. These shorter names can be typed quickly, but are impossible to read if you do not know what they refer to.

Windows PowerShell tries to compromise between clarity and brevity by providing a set of standard aliases that are based on shorthand names for common verbs and nouns. This allows a core set of aliases for common cmdlets that are readable once you know the shorthand names. For example, in standard aliases the verb Get is abbreviated to g, the verb Set is abbreviated to s, the noun Item is abbreviated to i, the noun Location is abbreviated to l, and the noun Command is abbreviated to cm.

Here is a brief example to illustrate how this works. The standard alias for Get-Item comes from combining g for Get and i for Item: gi. The standard alias for Set-Item comes from combining s for Set and i for Item: si. The standard alias for Get-Location comes from combining g for Get and l for Location, gl. The standard alias for Set-Location comes from combining s for Set and l for Location, sl. The standard alias for Get-Command comes from combining g for Get and cm for Command, gcm. There is no Set-Command cmdlet, but if there were, we would be able to guess that the standard alias comes from s for Set and cm for Command: scm. Furthermore, people familiar with Windows PowerShell aliasing who encounter scm would be able to guess that the alias refers to Set-Command.

Creating New Aliases

You can create your own aliases using the Set-Alias cmdlet. For example, the following statements create the standard cmdlet aliases discussed in Interpreting Standard Aliases:

Set-Alias -Name gi -Value Get-Item

Set-Alias -Name si -Value Set-Item

Set-Alias -Name gl -Value Get-Location

Set-Alias -Name sl -Value Set-Location

Set-Alias -Name gcm -Value Get-Command

Internally, Windows PowerShell uses commands like these during startup, but these aliases are not changeable. If you attempt to actually execute one of these commands, you will get an error explaining that the alias cannot be modified. For example:

PS> Set-Alias -Name gi -Value Get-Item

Set-Alias : Alias is not writeable because alias gi is read-only or constant and cannot be written to.

At line:1 char:10

+ Set-Alias <<<< -Name gi -Value Get-Item

Barcode Scanner for easy scanning of the labels and barcode images

04/25/2009

Barcode Scanners provide an efficient and error-free method of scanning barcode labels, saving time and costs.

Barcode scanners are light emitting devices fixed to a computer to read barcodes details or images. Barcode Scanner was invented by Bernard Silver and Joseph Woodland in 1952.A barcode scanner consists of a linear photodiode that can read the reflected light off the lines on the barcode image. The reflection of the digital image is scanned electronically to convert each bar on the barcode to a corresponding number or letter. The bars in the barcode image represent the binary numbers 0 and 1, and these are numbered from 0 to 9 for processing.

There are various types of barcode scanners like laser operated scanners, CCD barcode scanners, imager type scanners, etc. In laser based Barcode Scanners optical lenses and mirrors are used to capture the data where as in Image based scanners the camera takes the images for decoding the barcodes. Laser based barcode scanners are costlier than camera run scanners. Camera based barcode scanners are robust and sturdy and come with a shorter scanning capability of 5-10 inches.
Laser based Barcode Scanners are delicate to handle. These scanners have a wider viewing angle and longer scanning distance of up to 24 inches. The laser barcode scanner works by sending a low energy laser beam to read the spacing between patterns on the image. The fixed mirror in the Laser scanner reads the barcode details. The CCD barcode scanner or Charged-Coupled Devise Scanner comes with a light source that illuminates the object or barcode image when pointed towards it. On lighting the image, the barcode scanner reads the image and captures the data.

Nowadays Wireless scanners are being widely used by various industries to scan barcodes without the hassle of wires. These are connected to the base terminal wirelessly for transmitting information in the acceptable range or radius. These scanners come handy while scanning barcodes in difficult positions and angles. Wireless scanners can prove effective in warehouses where supplies and goods keep moving all the time. Using a wireless barcode scanner allows freedom of movement and thus more efficient.

Before you go out and buy a barcode scanner for yourself you can do a little research to find out various options available in the market and choose a scanner based on your needs and budget. You could check product reviews posted on the internet and ask questions to the users through online communities. Before you zero in on the scanner that fits your bill consider your usage, scanner size, scanning distance, and whether you want to go for hand held one or hands free scanner.

If you want to use a Barcode Scanner for long distance scanning the Laser based Scanner would be perfect for you. If you are going to use the barcode scanner in rough environment where it would be susceptible to knocks, Camera based scanner would prove beneficial to you. These days, with the advancement of technology we get a wide range of barcode scanners models to choose from. Depending up on the type of industry they are used, Barcode Scanners can be portable ones or desktop scanners.

How to Use a TASER C2

04/25/2009

If you have purchased a TASER C2 then it is very important that you know how to use it properly so you can have the best self defense possible. There are many things about a TASER you should know so you can use it effectively against an attacker. The first step, of course, is to read the directions and Owner's manual that came with the TASER you purchased. Also, most importantly, take the time to review the included Training DVD that comes with every TASER C2.

The TASER C2 model uses a Lithium battery cartridge that should provide enough power for about 50 firings. When you load the battery cartridge in the TASER make sure the magazine cartridge is not inside of the TASER. Load the battery cartridge into the TASER C2 and then reinsert the magazine cartridge. When the battery cartridge is in the TASER and has sufficient power, you will see a green light, which will notify you it, is working.

The next thing you need to do is load your air cartridges. Make sure the safety switch cover is closed and that the TASER is pointing in a safe direction. Remove the cartridge cover at the front of the C2 and insert the cartridge until you hear it click. That indicates it is locked in place. Just to make sure, gently pull on the sides of the cartridge. There is not an "up" or "down" on the air cartridges so you dont have to worry about putting the cartridge in wrong. This is also a nice feature for when you are under any stress so you can reload quickly if needed. Each cartridge carries the probes, wire, and compressed air. Do not try to open these cartridges.

When you hold a TASER you hold it as you would a handgun, vertically. There is a safety switch cover that you open to expose the firing button. Do not fire at an attacker that is more then 15 feet away. That is the maximum range of the C2. All TASER C2 models, except one, have a laser-aiming device. When aiming at a target keep in mind that where ever you see the laser, that is where the top probe will approximately land. If your safety permits, try to avoid aiming at the face, neck, head or groin area.

The optimum shot from the TASER C2 is from seven to ten feet away from the attacker to achieve maximum effect. If you shoot your attacker from about 7 feet away this will result in a probe spread of about 1 foot. Try to aim for the trunk of the body. Always try to have at least a 4-inch spread of the probes. At seven to ten feet away - the spread of the probes will be approximately 16 inches.

You should always practice firing with a TASER C2 before you actually need to use it. You can practice across the room at targets to get the best feel for the C2. TASERS have little miniature barbs in them that will actually puncture the skin or penetrate clothing to send the electrical volts and wattage into the body. When you are ready to use a TASER C2, flip the safety switch to expose the firing button and you will see a light that will be the indicator that the gun is ready to fire.

There is also a stun capability backup on the TASER C2 called the Drive Stun Back Up. This means that if you just happen to run out of cartridges and you still need to disable an attacker you can approach the person and use the stun gun functionality. The TASER C2 has two stun gun electrodes that will allow you to depress the volts into the attacker's neck or other exposed body part and then make your escape.

As soon as your attacker is on the ground and incapacitated, place the TASER C2 on the ground and run away to a safe location. Do not try to retrieve your TASER C2. TASER International will replace your C2 if you send them a copy of the police report of your attack.
